You are showing up.
Delivering. Hitting deadlines. Being the person everyone counts on.
Welcome to the burnout era nobody warned you about.
Not the dramatic kind where you cannot get out of bed. The sneaky kind. The kind that creeps in while you are still functioning, still performing, still insisting you are fine. The burnout era of the high achiever looks nothing like the stock photo version of a woman crying at her desk. It looks like a slightly more exhausted, slightly more irritable, slightly more hollow version of you showing up every day and calling it a busy season.
If you have ever seen the trend of “high achiever in her burnout era” and felt a little too seen by it, this is for you.
Here is the thing about burnout for women who are wired for more.
You do not stop. You just gradually become a depleted version of yourself while maintaining the appearance of someone who has it all together. And because you are still functioning, it does not register as burnout. It registers as needing to push through.
But your body has been sending signals.
You have just been too busy to read them.
Here are six signs you are in your burnout era and do not even realise it, and one quick somatic practice for each one to start bringing your nervous system back online before the burnout numbs you completely.
Not regular tired. The kind of tired that a full eight hours does not touch.
You wake up already behind. Already running the mental to-do list before your eyes are fully open. Your body was in bed but your nervous system never actually clocked out. It spent the whole night on low level alert, scanning for threats, processing the day, preparing for tomorrow.
This is not a sleep problem. It is a regulation problem.
Somatic practice: The two minute self hug
Before you get into bed tonight, sit on the edge of your mattress, cross your arms over your chest, and hold your own shoulders. Squeeze tightly. Stay there for two full minutes.
This activates the vagus nerve through gentle pressure and warmth, signals safety to your nervous system, and tells your body it is allowed to actually rest now. It sounds almost too simple. Do it anyway.
The email that would have been a minor inconvenience six months ago now makes you want to close the laptop and move somewhere with no wifi.
The client who used to be your favourite is starting to feel like a lot. Everything requires more patience than you currently have and you genuinely cannot figure out where your patience went.
This is not you becoming a difficult person. This is your nervous system running out of capacity to regulate. When your system is depleted, the window of tolerance shrinks. Small things feel big because your buffer is gone.
Somatic practice: Finger tapping reset
Touch your thumb to your index finger. Then your middle finger. Then your ring finger. Then your pinky. Then back again. Repeat slowly and deliberately for sixty seconds while taking slow, deep belly breaths.
This bilateral, rhythmic movement activates the prefrontal cortex and interrupts the threat response that is making everything feel like too much. Do it under your desk on your next difficult call. Nobody will know and you will come out of it a different person.
Not performed excited. Not I need to seem enthusiastic for this sales call excited.
Actually lit up by something. The passion that built your business is still there somewhere but it feels like it is behind glass. You can see it but you cannot quite reach it.
This is what depletion does to desire. It does not kill it. It buries it under survival mode.
Somatic practice: Play your song
Find the song. You know the one. The one that makes you feel like yourself, like you could do anything, like the version of you who started this business in the first place.
Play it loud. Sing along badly. Dance as if nobody is watching. Music and movement together are one of the fastest ways to shift your nervous system state. Two to three minutes of genuine physical joy is a legitimate regulation tool. Use it without apology.
You had a genuinely good day. You ticked everything off the list. You moved the needle on things that matter.
And by 9pm you are lying there running through everything you did not get to and wondering what happens if you cannot keep this pace up.
Your output did not change. Your nervous system’s ability to register it as sufficient did. That gap between what you are achieving and what you feel is one of the clearest signs your burnout era is running the show.
Somatic practice: Hip flexor release
Sit at the edge of your chair. Let one leg drop back so your knee points toward the floor and your hip opens forward. Hold for thirty to sixty seconds on each side with slow breathing.
Your hip flexors are one of the primary storage sites for unprocessed stress in the body. They are chronically shortened by sitting and chronically activated by the fight or flight response. Releasing them tells your nervous system at a physiological level that the threat has passed and the day is actually done.
You sit down to watch something and immediately feel guilty. You take a morning off and spend it thinking about Monday. You go on holiday and check your emails from the pool because switching off feels more stressful than staying on.
Your nervous system has learned that stopping is dangerous. So it makes rest feel like a threat to keep you moving. The result is that you never fully recover because recovery requires a level of safety your system is not currently offering you.
Somatic practice: The laughter prescription
Find a video that genuinely makes you laugh. Call the friend who always ends the conversation with your stomach hurting. Be ridiculous with your partner or your kids or your pet with zero agenda.
Laughter is one of the most underrated nervous system regulation tools available and it is completely free. It activates the ventral vagal state, which is the neurological sweet spot for genuine rest and social connection. You cannot laugh and stay in survival mode at the same time. Your nervous system physically will not allow it.
The jaw that is clenched before you open your eyes. The shoulders that have not been in their correct location in months. The headaches. The tension in your neck. The sleep that is light and easily interrupted.
Your body has been trying to tell you something. It just knew you were going to keep going anyway so it started whispering instead of shouting.
Somatic practice: Full body check-in scan
Stand up. Close your eyes. Starting from the top of your head, slowly move parts of your body. Jaw. Neck. Shoulders. Chest. Belly. Hips. Legs. Feet.
Wherever you notice tension, take one breath into that area and on the exhale consciously soften it. Do not force it. Then gently move that part of your body. Roll your shoulders. Drop your jaw. Shift your weight side to side.
This practice builds the body awareness that is the foundation of everything else. You cannot release tension you cannot feel. And most high achievers in their burnout era have been dissociated from their physical experience for so long that noticing is itself the intervention.
Now that you have read through all six signs, take a moment and ask yourself honestly.
How many of these did you read and think that is just how I am?
Because here is the thing about the high achiever burnout era.
It does not feel like burnout. It feels like personality. It feels like the price of ambition. It feels like what you signed up for when you decided to build something.
It is not.
It is your nervous system asking for something you have not given it yet.
The good news is that regulation is not about slowing down. It is not about wanting less or building less or being less. It is about bringing your nervous system along for the ride instead of dragging it behind you.
And it starts with one practice. Today. Before the burnout that has been quietly accumulating decides to make the decision for you.
If this resonated and you are ready to build a rhythm that does not require running on empty to be effective, the Rhythm and Revenue Blueprint and the somatic wealth work I do with female entrepreneurs is exactly where this begins.
